Godaddy, Why i really do not like them!
For anyone looking for Web development, more specifically Hosting services, you know that finding a decent one can be a bother. Trying to match both service with support, and get both of them in a balance is almost an impossible task. Looking to the largest hosting providers is usually the go-to for most people, mainly because the thinking is, if they are that large, they must be good at what they do. Which, in most cases would be completely true, except for Hosting providers. Looking to a large hosting provider to take care of your services ‘Should’ mean that you are provided with 24/7 support by knowledgeable individuals who care about your needs. It ‘Should’ mean that you’re able to get a lower cost service at the same quality as else where. However, this is not always the case, lets take GoDaddy as a prime example.
Before i continue, Lets take a moment to note that these are only my PERSONAL OPINION, but i will do my best to provide as much legitimate backing as possible.(Won't be too difficult)
My reasoning
To be honest, there are really only 5 big reasons i dislike them so much, all are fairly big when it comes to decisions made by a prospective client looking for services. Also, for those who watch my personal facebook, you’ve probably already seen me post this, as its basically a response (I’ll be changing it to fit this posting) i gave to a GoDaddy employee. Lets begin:
- GoDaddy has a long history of very unethical approaches to domain renewals, purchases and when you search. What i’ve seen happen is they will either:
- When searching for a domain, and you find a great one that has not been purchased yet. When searched and found, but saved for later, there have been reports of GoDaddy purchasing these domains from under people, then reselling them back at much higher rates.

- Bloated renewals fees. Sure that initial year is at $2.99/Year, but any additional years, so purchasing more than a single year, or renewing past that initial year, doubles and/or quadruples in price. (Basically comes down to Initial Year is $2.99 + $14.99 for each additional. Whereas you can go ANYWHERE ELSE and get it for between $8-$12/Year. Its not much, but does add up)

- “What Registrar provides what they do, at the price they do?”. This was the question posed to me when i initially started writing all of this. The answer may be extremely shocking to you guys, so fore warning, but………..EVERY ONE PROVIDES A BETTER SERVICE AT A BETTER PRICE. Let me explain:
- GoDaddy’s initial price per month for their Basic Hosting package is roughly (at time of this writing 08/30/2016) is $3.99/Month. Its Renewal, meaning the next time you receive a bill, the price Doubles to $7.99/Month. Sure this seems like a great deal, purchase up 2 years of cheap hosting for half the cost, but lets keep in mind 2 things:
- If you have to upgrade to a larger package, Move to a VPS, or even a server, sure you will get a rate minus the amount you’ve already spend. Little tid-bit though, the cost will be at the full rate, not a “50% sales” rate, as you are already a customer.
- You’re basically stuck with them as a service provider, and i say that only because of how they attempt to keep you as a client. as taking a look at their refund policy we find that:
- You can only get a refund if requested within 30-Days of the initial Purchase, IF IT IS AN ANNUAL PAYMENT
- If it is anything other than an ANNUAL payment, you are only allowed 48 hours to request a refund. This Includes, Monthly, 3-Month, 6-Month, and 9-Month terms.
Basically put, If at any point during your term with them, if you find a better price, better service, or just want to leave, you’ve just lost all your money, unless you’re fortunate enough to realize your mistake within their refund period.

Sure this seems like a great deal, purchase up 2 years of cheap hosting for half the cost, but lets keep in mind 2 things:
- Lets talk about their “Support”, or what they consider a support team, which are basically no more than a glorified sales team who try very hard to meet their quotas. Not once have i ever called into GoDady (yes i did have accounts with them at one point) and had someone simply help me. Every call is bombarded with at least 3-5 questions literally to try to get me to purchase something. I don’t need it, i don’t want it, and if i did, i’d ask for it.
- Service wise, GoDaddy can be top notch and a great service. This of course is dependent on the Time of Day, Weather patters, Astrological Alignment of the stars, Birth rates, and how Robert Parsons Left foot feels that day. Doing some investigating, i’ve learned a few things, which frankly piss me off, about GoDaddys service performance. Its Horrible, like yeah i understand they have a lot of people, but its worse than Hostgators performance, and i hate them even greater than i do GoDaddy. Few Examples (Yes i understand some of the examples are owned by EIG who own Hostgator and results may be a slight bit Off-Balance):
- GoDaddy Supported SOPA and PIPA, you know, those little internet censorship bills that the Govt tried to pass back in 2011? No? Well here, let me enlighten you:
All in all, yes i may just be another Sore web developer and Solo Hosting provider who just hates the big guys. But lets be honest, we all know about GoDaddy’s shady business practices, their unethical approaches and immoral standards. But they are in fact a amazing place to work, and do provide their employees with a great atmosphere. But in my opinion they do not provide a great service in an sense. Again, these are based on my opinions on what I’ve seen
